A taste of home, made to be shared.
Moving to Australia gave our family a new beginning. It also made us realise how deeply food can connect us to where we come from.
As we settled into life here, there were times when we found ourselves craving the Telugu sweets and savouries we had grown up with — the kind prepared for festivals, offered to guests, shared during family gatherings or simply enjoyed with an evening cup of tea.
We could find many wonderful Indian foods, but the particular flavours we remembered were not always easy to find.
The right texture of a laddu. The familiar crunch of murukulu. The sweetness of a traditional festive treat.
Small things, perhaps — but when you live far from where you grew up, those familiar tastes can carry a surprising amount of meaning.
Over time, we realised many others around us felt the same way. Friends and families would talk about foods they missed, festival favourites they remembered, or dishes they wished their children could experience in the same way they had.
That stayed with us. And gradually, the idea for HANI Foods began to take shape.
What if we could make some of those familiar Telugu flavours easier to enjoy here in Australia?
Not by trying to recreate someone’s grandmother’s kitchen or claim that one recipe represents every family. Every home has its own traditions.
Instead, we wanted to draw on our own experience and the foods we know, preparing vegetarian Telugu sweets and savouries with care and sharing them with people who appreciate those familiar flavours.
For us, food has always been part of much more than a meal. A box of sweets can arrive with congratulations. A plate of savouries can bring people together around a table. A festival favourite can remind someone of celebrations from years ago. And a child growing up in Australia can taste something their parents once enjoyed growing up thousands of kilometres away.
Those are the moments that inspired HANI.
We are proudly Brisbane-based, but the flavours behind HANI are shaped by the Telugu food traditions we carried with us.
Our hope is simple: when someone opens a HANI box, there is a moment of recognition. For some, it may be nostalgia. For others, it may be their first introduction to Telugu sweets and savouries. Either way, we hope it becomes something worth sharing.
Australia became our new home. HANI Foods is one small way we keep a connection to the flavours that came with us — while creating new memories here.
